Introduction to the poem

Introduction to the poem : This poem is about lost youth. According to Shelley everyone has the change to relate to at some stage in life. In the present poenithe poet sorrows at the loss of self-confidence and optimism. The poem expresses intense personal emotions of sadness. The poet laments the loss of his capacity to be happy.

कविता का परिचय-प्रस्तुत कविता समाप्त जवानी के बारे में है। शैली के अनुसार जीवन में परिवर्तन की सीमा पर पहुंचना प्रत्येक व्यक्ति से सम्बन्ध रखता है। प्रस्तुत कविता में कवि आत्म-विश्वास एवं आशावाद की हानि पर पश्चाताप करता है। कविता में कवि सीन व्यक्तिगत उदासी की भावनाओं का
वर्णन करता है। कवि प्रसन्न रहने की क्षमता के मष्ट होने का पश्चाताप करता है।

STANZAS AND THEIR EXPLANATIONS

Q. Explain with reference to the context of the following stanzas:

  • O World! O Life! O Time!
    On whose last steps I climb,
    Trembling at that where I had stood before;
    When will return the glory of your prime?
    No more-Oh, never more!

Word meanings : last steps (लास्ट स्टेप्स) = अन्तिम चरण, climb (क्लाइम्थ) = चदना, trembling (ट्रैम्बलिंग) = कांपते हुए, glory(ग्लोरी) = शान, prime (प्राइम) = सबसे अच्छा, never more (नेवर मोर) = कभी नहीं।

Reference: This stanza has been taken from the poem ‘A Lament’ Composed by P. B. Shelley.

Context: The poet is completely dejected. He has no joy in life. He feels he would not live long. Therefore he expresses his grief in these lines.

Explanation: The poet laments and says that this world is joyless. His life is without happiness, and his time is without pleasure forh. n. He has reached on the
last steps of his life. He had been strong and firm but now he is shivering with weakness. The poet feels that he will never again get back the lost joys of his
youthfulness.

व्याख्या-कवि पश्चाताप करता है और कहता है कि यह संसार आनन्दरहित है। उसका जीवन प्रसन्नतारहित है और उसका समय उसके लिए आनन्दरहित है। वह अपने जीवन के अन्तिम समय पर पहुंच गया है। वह मजबूत और दृद रह चुका है किन्तु अब वह कमजोरी से कॉप रहा है। कवि महसूस करता है कि वह फिर कभी अपनी युवावस्था के आनन्द को प्राप्त नहीं कर पाएगा। अर्थात् युवावस्था में व्यतीत किए आनन्द का वह उपयोग नहीं कर सकेगा।

  • Out of the day and night
    A joy has taken flight:
    Fresh spring, and summer, and winter-hoar
    Move my faint heart with grief, but with delight
    No more-Oh, never more!

Word meanings : flight (फ्लाइट) = उड़ान, fresh (फ्रेश) = ताजा, spring (स्प्रिंग) = वसन्त ऋतु. summer (समर) गर्मी, winter (विन्टर) = जाड़े की ऋतु, hoar (होर) = बहुत ठण्डी, move (मूद) = सिहरन पैदा करना, faint (फेन्ट) = कमजोर, grief (ग्रीफ) = दुःख, delight (डिलाइट) = प्रसन्नता।

Context: The poet is full of dejection and failure. His life is without happiness. The changing seasons give him no happiness. His sorrows will never leave him.

Explanation : The poet feels joy neither in the day nor in the night. Joy has abondoned him altogether. Fresh seasons of spring, summer and snowy winter
come and leave but give him no delight. The poet has nothing else but grief in his weak heart. He has lost joy for ever. It will never return any more in his life.

व्याख्या-कवि न तो दिन और रात को खुशी प्राप्त करता है। खुशी उसे छोड़कर जा चुकी है। प्रत्येक ऋतु-वसन्त, गर्मी व जाड़ा आते है और चले जाते हैं लेकिन उसे आनन्द नहीं देते। कवि के हदय

में दुःख के अतिरिक्त कुछ भी नहीं है। वह खुशी को हमेशा के लिए छोड़ चुका है। अब वह उसके जीवन में कभी वापस नहीं आएगी।

Central Idea of the Poem

The poem is a short musical expression of despair and dejection of the poet. The joy of world, life and time has deserted the poet for ever. He feels only grief. He
will never feel joy in this world, in his life and in this time.

हिन्दी अनुषाद-कविता कवि की संक्षिप्त निराशा और दुःख की अभिव्यक्ति है। संसार, जीवन और समय के आनन्द कवि को हमेशा के लिए छोड़ चुके हैं। यह केवल दुःख महसूस करता है। वह कभी समय, संसार और जीवन में सुख महसूस नहीं कर सकेगा।
