Introduction

Introduction : The writer of this essay is Robert Lynd. It has been extracted from his famous essays named ITremble To Think’. In this essay the writer deals with the subject taking in viewall possiblepros and cons about forgetting.

Forgetfulness

Forgetfulness: Manypeople are surprised to see a listofarticles lost by them on the railway platforms and now on saleat London Station. Modern man remem- bers so many things. In his day todaylife, he remembersalmosteverything thathe is expected to remember. Modern man remembers the addresses of his friends
and telephone numbers. A person forgets to take the medicine regularly. Heand remembers the time of lunch and dinner..

Guilt of forgetting

Guilt of forgetting: People forget topost letters. The writer himself forgets to post letters. He keeps the letters in his pocket and does not drop it. People forget umbrellas and walking sticks. He does not carry an umbrella for fear of losing it. Before sleeping people forget to switch off the lights. People forget to take the medicine on time. Many psychologists admitthat the people like to forget painful things. The players often forget their balls and bats in the trains. The same thing is true with the fishermen. They forget their fishing rods. The cause of forgetting is verystrange. Such type of forgetting seems to bevirtuous to the writer. Even Socrates and Coleridge would have forgotten to post the letters. The writer thinks that on the whole, the great writers and the composers of music have been men with exceptional powers of memory. It is also true that good memory is a common thing. A man who does not possess it, is called a cynic. The writer heard a story about a father who went with his baby in a perambulator and forgot the
perambulator in front ofa beer shop. How many men below the rank of a philosopher would be capable of such absent mindedness as this? The writer concludes that good memories make life
dull.
