Summary of the Story
Introduction: In this story an incident has been described which took place in India before independence. That was the time when people took part in the free- dom movement with patriotic zeal. Imprisonment, loss of property or job did not prevent the people from fighting for freedom. This story is related to such family
that is partriotic.
A man was sent to jail: It was the month of May. It was very hot afternoon. There were some freedom fighters in that heat. They took part in satyagrah. A man served them sherbet and pan. He was arrested. He was brought to the court in hand cuffs. His wife was there. She was deeply moved. She was now under the spell of patriotisin. She hated the court and wanted to touch her husband’s feet. He was sent to jail for one year.
His wife’s reaction : His wife got sweets for five rupees and fed the freedom fighters. That evening she attended a political meeting. She took a vow to follow satyagrah. She became very patriotic.
No help from relatives: The next day she sent telegrams to her father and the father-in-law. She had hoped for telegranis in reply. She received letters from both on the third day. They were full of anger. Her father-in-law received a pension from the Government. He wrote that it would be cut off if he took her side. Her father had a high post in the Department of forest. He wrote that his promotion would be stopped. She tore the letters.
Help from Babu Gyan Chand : She was alone in the house. There were two police detectives near her house. She was afraid. She bolted the door from inside and put a knile under her pillow. Somebody called. She was afraid and asked from the window who was there. It was Babu Gyan Chand, her husband’s best friend.
Gyan Babu was a school teacher. His wife was with him. They took her away to their house.
Gyan Babu in trouble: Within a week the two C.I.D.men came there. She saw them in front of the house. She was worried but Gyan Babu’s wife did not care. One evening Gyan Babu came home very much disturbed. He had a quarrel with the principal. His wife understood everything. The police had reported against Gyan Babu, The principal told him to turn that lady out of his house. His wife told Gyan Babu to go to principal at once. He should tell the principal that he would not let
that girl go from his house. If the principal did not like it, he could have his resig- nation. The next day when Gyan Babu was going to the school his wife told him to settle the matter. When he was gone, she said to his wife that she did not want to be a buden on them.
Conclusion: Gyan Babu gave his resignation letter to the principal. The prin- cipal went to the police cornmissioner. The two talked. Then they asked him some questions. He told them that he had no connection with the congress party. He was not the member of that party. He did not attend their meeting and did not contrib. ute to the party fund. They said nothing to Gyan Babu. The lady had a special
experience when her husband, as a freedom fighter, was jailed. She was helped and supported by a school teacher.

प्रस्तावना-इस कहानी में एक घटना का वर्णन है जो स्वतन्त्रता से पहले भारत में घटित हुई थी। उस समय लोग देश-भक्ति की भावना से स्वाधीनता आन्दोलन में भाग लेते थे। जेल में डालना. धन व नौकरी की हानि लोगों को स्वतन्त्रता के लिए लड़ने से नहीं रोकती थी। यह कहानी ऐसे परिवार से सम्बन्धित है जो देशभक्त है।
एक व्यक्ति को जेल भेजा गया-मई का महीना था। बहुत गर्मी वाली दोपहर थी। उस गर्मी में कुछ स्वतन्त्रता सेनानी थे। उन्होंने सत्याग्रह में भाग लिया। एक व्यक्ति ने उन्हें शर्बत और पान पेश किया। उसे गिरफ्तार कर लिया गया। उसे हथकड़ी लगाकर अदालत में लाया गया। उसकी पत्नी वहाँ थी। वह
अत्यधिक प्रभावित हुई। अब वह देशभक्ति की भावना से ओतप्रोत थी। वह अदालत से घृणा करती थी और अपने पति के पैर छूना चाहती थी। उसे एक साल के लिए जेल भेज दिया गया।
उसकी पत्नी की प्रतिक्रिया-उसकी पत्नी ने पाँच रुपये की मिठाई खरीदी और स्वतन्त्रत सेनानियों को खिला दी। उस शाम को उसने एक राजनीतिक पार्टी में भाग लिया। उसने सत्याग्रह में भाग लेने की शपथ ली। वह बहुत देशभक्त बन गई।
रिश्तेदारों से मदद नहीं-अगले दिन उसने पिता और ससुर के लिए टेलीग्राम भेज दिए। उसे टेलीग्राम का जबाव मिलने की आशा थी। उसे तीसरे दिन दोनों के पत्र मिले। वे क्रोधित थे। उसके ससुर को सरकार से पेन्शन मिलती थी। उसने लिखा कि यदि उसने उसका पक्ष लिया तो उसकी पेन्शन कट जाएगी। उसके पिता की वन विभाग में ऊँची पदवी वाली नौकरी थी। उसने लिखा कि उसकी प्रोन्नति रुक जाएगी। उसने पत्रों को फाड़ दिया।
बाबू जान चन्द से सहायता-वह घर में अकेली थी। उसके घर के पास दो पुलिस के जासूस थे। वह डरी हुई थी। उसने अन्दर से दरवाजे की कुण्डी लगा ली और तकिये के नीचे एक चाकू रख लिया। किसी ने आवाज दी। वह डर गई और खिड़की में से पूछा कि वहाँ कौन था ! वह बाबू ज्ञानचन्द थे, जो
उसके पति के अच्छे मित्र थे। ज्ञान बाबू स्कूल अध्यापक थे। उसकी पत्नी उसके साथ थी। वे उसे अपने घर ले गये।
ज्ञान बाबू परेशानी में-एक सप्ताह के भीतर दो सी.आई.डी. के लोग वहाँ आए। उसने उन्हें मकान के बाहर देखा। वह चिन्ता में पड़ गई परन्तु ज्ञान बाबू की पली ने कोई चिन्ता नहीं की। एक शाम ज्ञान बाबू बड़े परेशान घर आये। उसका अपने प्रधानाचार्य से झगड़ा हो गया था। उसकी पत्नी सारा मामला समझ गई। पुलिस ने शान बाबू के विरुद्ध रिपोर्ट कर दी थी। प्रधानाचार्य ने उससे कहा कि वह उस महिला को घर से बाहर निकाल दे। उसकी पत्नी ने ज्ञान बाबू से तुरन्त प्रधानाचार्य के पास जाने का कहा। उसे प्रधानाचार्य से कह देना चाहिए कि वह उस लड़की को घर से बाहर नहीं निकालेगा। यदि प्रधानाचार्य को यह पसन्द न आए तो वह अपना त्यागपत्र दे दें। अगले दिन जब ज्ञान बायू स्कूल का जा रहा था तो उसकी पत्नी ने उससे मामले का हल करने के लिए कहा। जब वह चला गया, तो उसने उसकी पत्नी से कहा वह उन लोगों पर बोझ नहीं बनना चाहती है।
निष्कर्ष-शान बाबू ने प्रधानाचार्य को अपना त्याग-पत्र दे दिया। प्रधानाचार्य पुलिस कमिश्नर के पास गया। दोनों ने बाने की। फिर उन्होंने उससे कुछ प्रश्न पूछे। उसने उनसे कहा कि उसका काँग्रेस पार्टी से कोई सम्बन्ध नहीं था। वह उस पार्टी का सदस्य नहीं था। उसने उनकी मीटिंग में भाग नहीं लिया
और पार्टी कोष में धन भी नहीं दिया। उन्होंने ज्ञान बाबू से कुछ नहीं कहा। उस महिला को, जब उसका पति जेल में चला गया, खास अनुभव हुआ। उसकी एक स्कूल अध्यापक ने सहायता की थी।
