Summary of the Story

Introduction

Introduction: The narrator of the story is the author himself. At that time he was a college student. He was twenty one years of age. He read Bombay magazine.
It was a popular magazine. The writer was reading the pen pal column of the magazine. He picked out the address of Alice H. She lived in Los Angeles, California.
(U.S.A).

Writer’s nervousness

Writer’s nervousness : The writer started writing a letter to his pen pal on a pink sheet. This sheet was very expensive. He was writing the letter to Alice H. living in Los Angeles, America because he wanted to make her his pen friend. He was overjoyed and felt nervous at the same time. Because it was his first letter to any woman.

Pen Pal’s reply

Pen Pal’s reply: Alice H. replied the letter at her earliest. She accepted his offer to be his pen pal. She usually wrote letters in a very pleasant language. But she did
not disclose much about herself. She sent him books, magazines and heavy gift packets. The narrator (writer) thought her to be very rich. He was sure that his pen
pal wold have been very beautiful girl.

Game of hide and seek

Game of hide and seek: Both the friends were very cautious. The writer wrote letters very carefully to his pen pal. He used the language as it might not displease
her. He was very polite and cultured in his manners. He did not put a question directly to Alice to send her photograph. She did not send in and pleaded that the
photograph was not ready at the moment. The author calls his correspondence with Alice as the game of hide and seek between the two.

Change of time

Change of time: By and by the time changed. The narrator (writer) advanced in his age. He was now leading a settled life with his wife and children. He got a job.
He kept on writing letters to hs pen pal. She too replied in time. But there came a change in time. Their correspondence became irregular. The narrator did not feel much excitement.

Reality of friendship

Reality of friendship : One day, the narrator received a packet. It was from America. A friend of Alice sent it. It had some magazines and a photo of Alice. There
was also a note in brief in that packet. This note contained an information that his pen pal named Alice died in an accident. She was seventy eight years of age.

Conclusion

Conclusion: When the narrator read the note, he was overwhelmed and his heart filled with emotions. Though Alice was seventy eight years old, her face was beautiful and full of compassion. He expressed his sad feelings when he came to know about her death, as under : “It is a face I would have cherished even when! was a shy college boy and she already old.”

प्रस्तावना-इस कहानी का वर्णन करने वाला लेखक स्वय है। इस समय वह कालेज का विद्यार्थी था। वह इक्कीस वर्ष का था। उसने बम्बई पत्रिका पढ़ी। यह एक विख्यात पत्रिका थी। लेखक पत्रिका का पत्र-मित्र खण्ड पद रहा था। उसने ऐलिस एच. का पता चुना। वह उत्तरी अमेरिका, केलीफोर्निया के
लॉस एन्जलस में रहती थी।

लेखक का तनाव

लेखक का तनाव-लेखक ने अपने पत्र-मित्र को गुलाबी कागज पर पत्र लिखना प्रारम्भ किया। यह कागज बहुत कीमती था। वह यह पत्र ऐलिस एच. के लिए लिख रहा था जो अमेरिका में लॉस ऐन्जलस में रहती थी। क्योकि वह उसे अपना पत्र-मित्र बनाना चाहता था। वह अति प्रसन्न था साथ ही तनाव में भी था। क्योंकि किसी महिला के लिए लिखा जाने वाला यह उसका पहल पत्र था।

पत्र-मित्र का उत्तर

पत्र-मित्र का उत्तर-ऐलिस एच. ने तुरन्त ही उसके पत्र का उत्तर दिया। उसने उसका पत्र-मित्र होना स्वीकार कर लिया था। वह साधारणतया पत्रों को बहुत ही आनन्ददायक भाषा में लिखती थी। लेकिन उसने अपने बारे में कुछ अधिक नहीं बतलाया । वह उसके लिए पत्रिकाएँ, पुस्तके और उपहार के
भारी बण्डल भेजा करती थी। वर्णनकर्ता (लेखक) उसे काफी धनवान समझता था। उसे पूरा विश्वास था कि उसकी पत्र-मित्र बहुत ही सुन्दर लड़की होगी।

आँख मिचौनी का खेल

आँख मिचौनी का खेल-दोनों ही मित्र बहुत सतर्क थे। लेखक अपनी पत्र-मित्र के लिए बहुत सावधानीपूर्वक पत्र लिखता था। वह ऐसी भाषा का प्रयोग करता था जो उसे अप्रिय न लगे। वह लिखते समय बहुत नम्र और सभ्य तरीका अपनाता था। वह ऐलिस से उसका फोटो भेजने के लिए सीधा प्रश्न
नहीं करता था। उसने भी उसके लिए अपना फोटो नहीं भेजा और कहा कि उस समय उसका फोटो तैयार नहीं था। लेखक अपने पत्र-मित्र को पत्र लिखने के कार्य को आँख मिचौनी का खेल कहता था।

समय परिवर्तन

समय परिवर्तन-धीरे-धीरे, समय में परिवर्तन हुआ। लेखक (वर्णन कर्ता) की उम्र बड़ी हुई। अब वह अपनी पत्नी और बच्चों के साथ नियमित जीवन व्यतीत कर रहा था। उसकी नौकरी लग गई थी। उसने अपने पत्र-मित्र को पत्र लिखना जारी रखा। वह भी समय से उत्तर देती थी। लेकिन समय में
परिवर्तन आया। उनका पत्र व्यवहार अनियमित हो गया। लेखक को वह उत्साह नहीं रहा।

मित्रता की वास्तविकता

मित्रता की वास्तविकता-एक विन, लेखक को एक बण्डल मिला। वह अमेरिका से था। ऐलिस के एक मित्र ने उसे भेजा था। उसमें कुछ पत्रिकाएँ और ऐलिस का फोटो था। उस बण्डल में एक निर्देश भी लिखा था। उस निर्देश में लिखा था कि उसकी पत्र-मित्र ऐलिस का एक दुर्घटना में देहान्त हो गया था। उसकी उम्र अठहत्तर वर्ष थी।

उपसंहार

उपसंहार-लेखक ने जब नोट पदा तो वह भाव-विभोर हो गया और हदय भावनाओं से भर गया। यद्यपि ऐलिस अठहत्तर वर्ष की थी, लेकिन उसका चेहरा बहुत सुन्दर था और दया से पूर्ण था। जब उसने उसकी मृत्यु के बारे में जाना तो उसने शोकपूर्ण विचार इस प्रकार व्यक्त किए-

“यह वह चेहरा है जिस पर सौंदर्य और करुणा झलकती थी। इस चेहरे को मैं तब भी प्यार करता था जब मैं एक शर्मीला कॉलेज छात्र था और वह उस समय भी वृद्धा थी।
