Summary of the Story
Introduction
Introduction : The writer of this story “The Gold Watch’ has described the psychology of a poor labourer in the story. He works in a factory. He is unskilled. He gets very low salary. His problems compelled him to commit the theft. He was not a thief. His name was Sanku.
Sanku’s family
Sanku’s family: Sanku had a family. He had a wife and two children. His wife was going to deliver the third child. The number of his farnily members was increasing
His problems
His problems : Sanku needed money very much. The money he got was not sufficient. He could not return the money taken on loan. He had to pay four and a half rupees for purchase at the store. But the problem was that the amount taken as loan was more than he would get as his pay from the factory. He had other needs
too. So he was in trouble. He had no peace in his mind. He started thinking how he could get more money for his reeds.
Engineer’s gold watch
Engineer’s gold watch : An engineer of his factory had a gold watch. He generally put this watch on his table near the glass window which remained half open. The engineer whenever went to lunch, left his watch on the table. All the workers of the factory also used to go out of the factory during their lunch hours.
Sanku stole the gold watch
Sanku stole the gold watch: Sanku decided to steal the gold watch, get rid of his problems. It was one O’clock. It was lunch time. Sanku saw that the engineer had gone out of his office. The glass window was half open and saw the watch lying there on the table. He stretched his arm and took away the watch. He was not an accustomed thief, therefore he hesitated committing the theft. He gathered the courage for stealing the watch and put it into his pocket.
Sanku’s nervousness
Sanku’s nervousness: Sanku felt greatly nervous when he stole the watch and put it into his pocket. He trembled and was afraid of being dismissed of the service and would be insulted if caught.
Sanku put the watch back
Sanku put the watch back: Sanku was troubled. He thought that the other workers of the factory would laugh at him. He would get ruined totally. Therefore, he put the watch on its place silently and went away from there

उसकी समस्याएँ-संकू को पैसे की अति आवश्यकता थी। धन जो उसे मिलता था, पर्याप्त नहीं था। वह कर्ज पर लिया धन चुका नहीं सका । उसे स्टोर से सामान लेने के साढ़े चार रुपये चुकाने थे। लेकिन समस्या यह थी कि कर्ज का पैसा मजदूरी में मिलने वाले पैसे से अधिक था। उसकी अन्य

संकू ने सोने की घड़ी चुराई-संकू ने सोने की घड़ी चुराने का निश्चय किया और समस्याओं से छुटकारा पाना चाहा। दोपहर का एक बजा था। यह लंच का समय था। संकू ने देखा कि इन्जीनियर ऑफिस से बाहर चला गया। काँच की खिड़की आधी खुली थी और देखा कि सोने की घड़ी मेज पर पड़ी
थी। उसने अपनी बाँह फैलाई और घड़ी को ले लिया। वह अभ्यस्त चोर नहीं था इसलिए वह चोरी करने में झिझका। उसने घड़ी चुराने के लिए साहस बटोरा और इसे अपनी जेब में रख लिया।
संकू की व्याकुलता
संकू की व्याकुलता-संकू ने घड़ी चुराकर जेब में रखी तो बहुत व्याकुल हुआ। वह काँपने लगा और नौकरी से निकाले जाने से भयभीत था और यदि पकड़ा गया तो अपमान का डर था।
संकू ने घड़ी वापस रख दी
‘संकू ने घड़ी वापस रख दी-संकू व्याकुल था। उसने सोचा कि कारखाने के अन्य कर्मचारी उस पर हैंसेंगे। वह पूरी तरह बर्वाद हो जाएगा। इसलिए उसने घड़ी को चुपचाप उसी स्थान पर रख दिया और वहाँ से चला गया।
