About the Play
This is a tragic-comedy written by W. Shakespeare. Antonio, the famous merchant of Venice, borrowed money from Shylock, a rich jew, to help his friend Bassanio, Bassanio wanted to marry Portia. He was in need. Antonio also did not have money at that time. So he borrowed money from Shylbock. He signed a bond to repay money in due time. But the failed to pay the money back in time. Shylocs filed a suit in the court of Duke. Shylock demanded a pound of Antonio’s thesis
according to the terms of the Bond. Portia, the wife of Bassanio, appeared in the court disguised as a lawyer. She appealed to Shylock to show mercy to Antonio and thus turned his mind.
नाटक के विषय में
यह विलियम शेक्सपीयर द्वारा लिखित एक दुख सुखान्त नाटक है। वेनिस के एक प्रसिद्ध व्यापारी एन्टोनियो ने अपने मित्र बैरोनियो की सहायता करने के लिए एक धनी यहूदी शायलॉक से कर्ज लिया। सेनियो पोशिया से शादी करना चाहता था। उसे धन की आवश्यकता थी। उस समय एन्टोनियो के पास भी पैसा नहीं था। अतः उसने शायलॉक से धन उधार लिया। उसने निश्चित समय पर धन लौटाने के लिए एक बॉण्ड पर हस्ताक्षर किए। लेकिन वह निश्चित समयावधि में धन लोटाने में असफल रहा। शायलॉक ने ड्यूक की अदालत में एक मुकदमा दायर कर दिया। यॉण्ड की शर्त के अनुसार शायलॉक ने एक पाउण्ड गोश्त एन्टोनियो से मांगा। बैसेनियो की पत्नी पोर्शिया एक वकील के वेश में अदालत में उपस्थित हुई। उसने शायलॉक से एन्टोनियो के प्रति दयालुता दिखलाने की प्रार्थना की, और इस प्रकार उसका इदय परिवर्तन किया।
SUMMARY OF THE PLAY
नाटक का सारांश
Act-I
Scene I: The scene opens in the street of Venice. Antonio, a merchant of Venice, is talking to his friends. He expresses his ideas and says that he is very sad at heart but he does not know the cause of his sadness.
Bassanio, his best friend, discloses his heart before him and tells that he has fallen in love with Portia, a very rich lady of Belmont. Antonio forgets all about his sadness in the company of his best friend Bassanio. Bassanio wants to win Portia’s hand but he is short of money. Antonio says that he can borrowloan from someone on his credit.
Scene II : Portia and her maid Nerissa are talking about their private life. Portia tells that she has enough wealth but no peace of mind. She has no freedom in the choice of her life partner. Her father has left behind a strange will. According to it she has to marry the person who chooses the right casket. Nerissa tells that her father’s ‘will’ will certainly help her in getting a good life partner.
Scene-II Bassanio visits Shylock, a Jew money lender. He wants to borrow from him three thousand ducats on behalf of Antonio, Shylock charges too much interest from his borrowers. He hates Christians specially Antonio. He is very glad for he would get a chance to take revenge from Antonio, He puts two conditions to Joan money to Antonio. First, he will lend him three thousand ducates for three months without any interest. Second, if he fails to refund the loan in time, he will charge one pound of flesh froin any part of his body. Bassanio warns Antonio not to sign the bond. But Antonio is confident about the timely return of his ships and the refund of loan. So he agrees to Shylock’s proposal.

दृश्य 1 : वेनिस की सड़क का दृश्य खुलता है। वेनिस का एक व्यापारी एन्टोनियो अपने मित्रों से वार्तालाप कर रहा है। वह अपने विचार व्यक्त करता है और कहता है कि वह बहुत उदास है किन्तु उदासी का कारण नहीं जानता।
उसका परम मित्र वैसेनियो अपने मन की बात उससे प्रकट करता है और कहता है कि वह बेलमॉण्ट की एक अति धनी महिला से प्रेम करने लगा है। एन्टोनियो अपने मित्र बैसेनियो की संगत पाकर अपनी उदासी को भूल जाता है। बैसेनियो पोर्शिया का दिल जीतना चाहता है किन्तु उसके पास धन की कमी है। एन्टोनियो कहता है कि वह किसो से उसके लिए धन उधार ले सकता है।
दृश्य 2: पोर्शिया और उसकी नौकरानी नेरीसा अपनी व्यक्तिगत जिन्दगी के बारे में बातें कर रही हैं। पोशिंया कहती है कि उसके पास पर्याप्त धन है लेकिन मन में शान्ति नहीं है। उसे अपना जीवन साथी चुनने की स्वतन्त्रता नहीं है। उसके पिता ने एक अजीब वसीयत छोड़ी है। वसीयत के अनुसार उसे उसी व्यक्ति के साथ शादी करनी है जो सही डिब्बे को धुनेगा। नेरीसा कहती है कि उसके पिता की वसीयत के द्वारा उसे सही जीवनसाथी मिलेगा।
दृश्य 3: बैसेनियो एक यहूदी साहूकार शायलॉक से मिलता है। वह उससे एन्टोनियो की मार्फत तीन हजार डूकेट्स उधार लेना चाहता है। शायलॉक अपने कर्जदारों से बहुत अधिक व्याज वसूला करता है। वह ईसाइयों, खासतौर से एन्टोनियो से बहुत घृणा करता है। वह खुश होता है क्योंकि उसे एन्टोनियो से बदला लेने का अवसर मिलेगा। वह एन्टोनियो को कर्ज देने की दो शर्ते रखता है। पहली, वह तीन हजार डूकेट्स तीन महीने की अवधि के लिए बिना ब्याज के देगा। दूसरी, यदि वह निर्धारित समय तक धन वापस नहीं कर पायेगा तो उसके शरीर के किसी भी हिस्से से एक पाउण्ड गोश्त काट लेगा। वैसेनियो इस शर्त पर हस्ताक्षर करने के लिए एन्टोनियो से मना करता है। किन्तु एन्टोनियो को विश्वास है कि उसके जहाज समय से वापस आ जायेंगे और वह धन वापस कर देगा। अतः वह शायलोंक के प्रस्ताव पर सहमत हो जाता है।
Act-II
Scene I: The prince of Morocco is one of the suitors of Portia. He requests Portla not to reject him for his dark complexion. Portia advises him to wait for the right moment.
Scene II : Launcelot Gobbo, the son of old Gobbo, is a clown. He is in the service of Shylock. He tells his father that he has decided to leave Shylock and serve Bassanio. At the same time Bassanio comes there and accepts his wish. Bassanio is ready to go to woo the land of Portia. He takes Gratiano, his friend, with him. Bassanio puts a condition that he would keep his tongue under control

Scene III : Launcelot goes to Shylock’s home and takes a hearty fare well from Jessica, the daughter of Shylock. She requests him to do her a favour by passing on
a private letter to her lover, Lorenzo. She makes up her mind to run away with Lorenzo and marry him.
Scene IV : Launcelot comes to lorenzo and gives him the letter of Jessica. Lorenzo asks him to tell jessica to reach the decided place. Launcelot goes away to invite Shylock to the dinner at Bassanio’s place.
Scene V:Shylock hands over the key of his house to Jessica before going to the dinner at Bassanio’s place. He warns her to keep all doors and windows closed..
Scene VI : Lorenzo comes late to join the masquerade, Jessica sees him and comes down in a boy’s dress to join the masquerade. She hands over to Lorenzo caskets containing ducats and valuable stones.
Scene VII : Portia appears with the prince of Morocco. He is led to open the three caskets. The prince reads the inscriptions on these caskets one by one and finally chooses the gold casket. Hechose a wrong casket. He went away disappointed on his failure.
Scene VIII: Shylock is shocked at the elopement of his daughter with Lorenzo. He moves the duke to search them but fails.
Scene IX: The prince of Arragon comes to Woo Portia. But he too chooses the wrong casket and goes away with a heavy heart.
अंक द्वितीय
दृश्य I : मोरक्को का राजकुमार पोर्शिया से शादी करने वालों में से एक है। वह पोर्शिया से विनती करता है कि वह उसकी काली चमड़ी के कारण उसको अस्वीकार न करे! पोर्शिया उससे सही समय की प्रतीक्षा करने के लिए कहती है।
दृश्य 2: बूदे गोबो का बेटा लॉन्सलॉट गोबो एक विदषक है। वह शायलॉक के यहाँ नौकरी करता है। वह अपने पिता से कहता है कि वह शायर्लोक के यहाँ से नौकरी छोड़कर बैसेनियो के यहाँ नौकरी करना चाहता है। उसी समय बैसेनियो वहाँ आ जाता है और उसकी इच्छा को स्वीकार कर लेता है।
वैसेनियो पोर्शिया से शादी करने जाने को तैयार है। वह अपने मित्र ग्रेशियानो को अपने साथ ले लेता है। बैसेनियो उसके सामने शर्त रखता है कि वह पोशिया के सामने अपनी जवान बन्द रखेगा।
दृश्य 3:लॉन्सलॉट शायलॉक के घर जाता है और जेसिका से सहदय विदाई लेता है। वह उससे प्रार्थना करती है कि वह उसके प्रेमी लॉरेन्जो को उसका व्यक्तिगत पत्र देने की कृपा करे। वह लॉरेन्जी के साथ भाग जाना चाहती है और उससे शादी करना चाहती है।
दृश्य 4: लॉन्सलॉट लॉरेन्जो के पास आता है और उसे जैसिका का पत्र देता है। लॉरेन्जो उससे कहता है कि वह जैसिका से निर्धारित स्थान पर पहुँचने के लिए कहे। लॉग्सलॉट शायलॉक को बैसेनियों के यहाँ दावत में पहुंचने का निमन्त्रण देने जाता है। .
दश्य 5:बैसेनिया के यहाँ दावत में जाने से पहले शायलॉक घर की चाबी जेसिका को देता है। वह उसे सभी वरवाजे और खिड़की बन्द रखने की चेतावनी देता है।
दृश्य 6: लॉरेन्जो जुलूस में देर से आता है। जेसिका उसे देखती है और जुलूस में शामिल होने के लिए लड़के के वेश में नीचे आती है। वह लॉरेन्जो को ड्यूकेट और कीमती रत्नों से भरा डिव्या देती है।
दृश्य 7: पोशिया मोरक्को के राजकुमार के साथ प्रकट होती है। उसे डिब्बों को खोलने के लिए ले जाया जाता है। राजकुमार डिग्धों पर लिखी इबारत को एक-एक करके पढ़ता है। और अन्त में सोने के डिब्बे को चुनता है। उसने गलत डिब्बे को चुना। वह अपनी असफलता पर निराश होकार चला गया।
दृश्य 8:शायलॉक को अपनी बेटी का लॉरेन्जो के साथ भाग जाने पर पक्का लगता है। वह इयूक को उन्हें खोजने के लिए भेजता है मगर असफल रहता है।
‘दृश्य 9: अरागॉन का राजकुमार पोर्शिया से शादी करने आता है। लेकिन वह भी गलत डिव्या चुनता है और भारी हृदय से चला जाता है।
Act-III
Scene 1: Shylock informs Salarino, a companion of Antonio and Bassanio, that Antonio has lost everything and has become a bankrupt. He thinks how he will
take a pound of flesh froin Antonio’s body as the penalty of the bond. Just then Tubal, a friend of Shylock, comes and informs that he could not search Jessica and
Lorenzo. Shylock curses his daughter and orders Tubal to engage a lawyer to execute Antonio for the failure of the bond.
Scene 11 : Bassanio reaches Belmont and expresses his desire to choose the casket. Portia remains in suspense. Bassanio chooses the right casket. He finds the
portrait of Portia in it. Portia is very happy. At the same time salarino comes with a letter. Bassanio comes to know about Antonio’s condition and mischief of Shylock.
Portia asks him to go to help his friend,
Scene III : Shylock is firm to take a pound of flesh fror Antonio’s body. People try to convince him to leave his unjust demand but he does not listen to anybody.
Scene IV: Portia and Nerissa put on male dresses after the departure of Bassanio to Venice. They leave the house in the charge of Lorenzo and Jessica,
Scene V: Launcelot meets Jessica and tells her that she will be damned for her father’s sin.
अंक तृतीय
दृश्य 1:शायलॉक एन्टोनियो और बैसेनियो के एक साथी सेलेरीनो को बतलाता है कि एन्टोनियो अपना सब कुछ गंवा चुका है और दिवालिया हो गया है। वह सोचता है कि वह किस प्रकार एन्टोनियो से दण्डस्वरूप एक पाउण्ड गोश्त लेगा। तभी शायलॉक का एक मित्र टूबल आता है और सूचित करता है कि वह जैसिका और लॉरेन्जो की तलाश नहीं कर सका शायलॉक अपनी बेटी को कोसता है तथा टूबल से एन्टोनियो के खिलाफ उसके द्वारा बॉण्ड की शर्त पूरा न करने के कारण एक वकील नियुक्त करने के लिए कहता है।
दृश्य 2: बैसेनियो बैलमॉण्ट पहुँचता है और डिब्बा चुनने की अपनी इच्छा प्रकट करता है। पोशिया असमंजस में रहती है। वैसेनियो सही डिब्बे को चुनता है। उसे उसमें पौर्शिया का चित्र मिलता है। पोर्शिया बहुत खुश होती है। उसी समय सेलेरीनो एक पत्र के साथ आता है। बैसेनियो एन्टोनियो की शर्त और शायलॉक की मक्कारी के बारे में जानता है। पोर्शिया उससे अपने मित्र की सहायता करने के लिए जाने को कहती है।
दृश्य 3: शायलॉक एन्टोनियो के शरीर से एक पाउण्ड गोश्त लेने के लिए दृढ़ है। लोग उससे उसकी अनुचित माँग छोड़ने की कहने की कोशिश करते हैं। लेकिन वह किसी को नहीं सुनता।
दृश्य 4: वैसेनियो के वेनिस के लिए प्रस्थान करने पर पोर्शिया और नेरिसा पुरुष वेश बनाती है। वे घर की जिम्मेदारी लॉरेन्जो और जेसिका को सौंप कर निकल जाती है।
दृश्य 5 : लॉन्सलॉट जेसिका से मिलता है और उसे बताता है कि अपने पिता के पापों के कारण उसे धिक्कारा जाएगा। ……
Act-IV
Scene 1: Duke tries to convince Shylock to change his mind and take more money, but Shylock stays firm at his words. At the time Portia appears in the court as a lawyer. She makes an appeal to Shylock to be merciful to Antonio. When he denies she asks him to take a pound of flesh from Antonio’s body but he will neither shed a single drop of blood, nor he will cut more or less than a pound of flesh. Shylock is stunned. He does not know what to do. Now he is agree to take money. But Portia says to him that he will get nothing but justice. Shylock has conspired against the life of a gentleman. Therefore, he will lose half of his property to the government and the other half will go to Anotonio.
Scene II: Bassanio offers three thousand ducats to the young lawyer, Portia, but she takes a pair of gloves from Antonio and demands Bassanio’s wedding ring. Gratiano gives Bassanio’s ringto Portia. Nerissa also tries to get a ring from Gratiano.
अंक चतुर्थ
दश्य 1: ड्यूक शायलॉक को अपना मन परिवर्तन करने को राजी करने का प्रयास करता है। और अधिक धन ले जाने को कहता है। लेकिन शायलॉक अपने शब्दों पर दृद बना रहता है। उसी समय पोशिया अदालत में वकील के वेश में उपस्थित होती है। वह शायलॉक से एन्टोनियो के प्रति दयावान बनने की अपील करती है। जब वह मना कर देता है, तो पोर्शिया उससे एन्टोनियो के शरीर से एक पाउण्ड गोश्त लेने के लिए कहती है लेकिन वह न तो एक भी बूंद खून बहाये और न एक पाउण्ड से कम या ज्यादा काटे शायलाक स्तब्ध रह जाता है। वह नहीं जानता कि क्या करे। अब वह धन लेने को राजी हो जाता है। किन्तु पोर्शिया उससे कहती है कि अब उसे न्याय के अतिरिक्त कुछ नहीं मिलेगा। शायलॉक ने एक भद्र पुरुष के जीवन के विरुद्ध षड्यन्त्र रचा है इसलिए उसे अपनी आधी सम्पत्ति राज्य को देनी होगी और शेष सम्पत्ति एन्टोनियो को मिलेगी।
दृश्य 2: बैसेनियो युवा वकील पोर्शिया को तीन हजार ड्यूकेट्स देना चाहता है किन्तु वह एन्टोनियों से एक जोड़ी दस्ताने लेती है और बैसेनियो से उसकी शादी की अंगूठी माँगती है। ग्रेशियानो वैसेनियो की शादी की अंगूठी पोशिया को देता है। नरिसा भी ग्रेसियानो से अंगूठी पाने का प्रयास करती है।
Act-V
Portia, Nerissa, Bassanio, Antonio and Gratiano enter the house. Now Portia and Nerissa demand their wedding ring from their husbands. They reply that they have given their rings to the young lawyer and his clerk. Both quarrel with their husbands. Now Portia discloses how she disguised herself as a lawyer and saved Antonio’s life. Antonio’s ships come back safely. The mystery is solved everybody is happy except Shylock
अंक पंचम
पोर्शिया, नेरिसा, बैसेनियो, एन्टोनियो और ग्रेसियानो घर में प्रवेश करते हैं। अन्य पोर्शिया और नेरिसा अपने पतियों से शादी की अंगूठी माँगती हैं। वे जबाव देते हैं कि उन्होंने अपनी अँगूठी युवा बकील और उसके लिपिक को दे दी हैं। दोनों अपने पतियों से झगड़ा करती हैं। अब पोशिया भेद खोलती है कि उसने किस प्रकार वेश बदलकर एन्टोनियो की जान बचाई।। एन्टोनियो के जहाज सुरक्षित वापस लौट आते हैं। रहस्य खुलता है और शायलॉक को छोड़कर सभी प्रसन्न हैं।
