character. The whole story of the play revolves around him.
A true friend
A true friend: Antonio is a very famous and rich merchant of Venice. He is the owner of a number of merchant ships. He is a devoted, unselfish and loyal friend.
He takes loan for his friend Bassanio and puts his life in danger.
Akind hearted man
Akind hearted man: Antonio is a kind hearted man. He is always ready to help others. He gives money to the needy without charging any interest. He helps his friend Bassanio generously. He is sweet tempered and soft spoken. He does not offend anyone. He is good and gentle to all.
A true christian
A true christian : Antonio is a communally biased person like all other christians. He is a true christian. He has a deep rooted hatred for all the jews specially for Shylock.

एक सच्चा मित्र : एन्टोनियो वेनिस का बहुत प्रसिद्ध और धनवान व्यापारी है। वह कई व्यापारिक जहाजों का मालिक है। वह एक समर्पित, स्वार्थरहित और वफादार मित्र है। वह अपने मित्र बैसेनियो के लिए कर्ज लेता है और अपने जीवन को खतरे में डालता है।

Ans. His personality: Bassanio possessed a charming personality. He may be possessing many good qualities but he must be a handsome young man otherwise
a woman like Portia, a rich heiress like her, could not take a fancy to him. In the second scene of the first act Nerissa says to Portia about Bassanio-‘He of all the
men that ever my foolish eyes looked upon was the best deserving a fair lady.’
His extravagance
His extravagance : By his own confession, Bassanio stands accused of extravagance. He is not only extravagant but most recklessly and shamelessly
extravagant, because after having wasted so much money on empty shows he does not seem to regret in the least. He takes loans for so many lines from Antonio.
A fortune hunter
A fortune hunter : Some of the critics have taken Bassanio as nothing but a fortune hunter, because he says openly to Antonio that he would like to woo and
win Portia simply because she is a rich heiress.
His love and friendship for Antonio
His love and friendship for Antonio : Bassanio has no less love for Antonio than Antonio has for Bassanio. If Bassanio had been a mere fortune hunter of friendship, he would not have felt so much worried on account of Antonio while Antoniowas signing the bond with Shylock-
उसका व्यक्तित्व-बैसेनियो का व्यक्तित्व आकर्षक था। उसमें कई अन्य गुण हो सकते हैं किन्तु उसका व्यक्तित्व आकर्षक था, अन्यथा पोशिया जैसी धनी उत्तराधिकारी उसके प्रति आकर्षित नहीं हो सकती थी। प्रथम अंक के द्वितीय दृश्य में नेरिसा बैसेनियो के बारे में पोशिया से कहती है-‘मैंने अपने
जीवन में जितने भी पुरुषों को देखा है. उन सबमें वह आपके लिए उपयुक्त व्यक्ति है.
उसकी दरियादिली-(दिल खोलकर खर्च करना) अपने स्वयं के कथनानुसार बैसेनियो एक फिजूलखर्च व्यक्ति है। वह केवल फिजूल खर्च ही नहीं है, बल्कि बिना रुके, शर्म छोड़कर फिजूलखर्च करने वाला है क्योंकि दिखावे में इतना अधिक धन खर्च करने के बाद भी उसे तनिक भी पश्चाताप नही
है। वह कई बार एन्टोनियो से कर्ज लेता है। .
एक भाग्यवादी व्यक्ति-कुछ आलोचकों ने बैसेनियो को भाग्यवादी व्यक्ति के अतिरिक्त और कुछ नहीं माना है। क्योंकि वह एन्टोनियो से स्पष्ट रूप से कहता है कि वह पोशिया से केवल धन के लिए शादी कर रहा है।
उसका एन्टोनियो के प्रति प्रेम और मित्रता-बैसेनियो एन्टोनियो से उतना ही प्रेम करता है जितना एन्टोनियो उससे करता है। यदि वह भाग्य को अपने पक्ष में करने वाला होता तो जब एन्टोनियो बॉण्ड पर हस्ताक्षर कर रहा था तब वह इसके लिए इतना अधिक चिन्तित नहीं होता।

Ans. His personality
Ans. His personality : Shylock’s physical personality is not attractive. He is dwarf, bent stature with keen eyes and long unkempt hair. He looks older than his age. His personality lies in his intelligence, his shrewdness, his courage and deter- mination.
His suspicious nature
His suspicious nature: Shylock is the only character in the whole play, who appears to be extremely suspicious. He suspects his own daughter and that is why, he warns her not to peep through the window. He suspects the christians. He suspects his own domestic servant Launcelot. He suspects Bassanio and Antonio. He suspects the Duke.
His inhumanity
His inhumanity: His inhumanity is due to Antonio’s personal ill-treatment to him. The loss of business is the real cause of Shylock’s inhumanity, which he exhibits only to Antonio.
His intellect
His intellect: Nobody in the whole play can match Shylock in intellect except Portia, who outwits him in the open court of law, the manner in which he replies to Portia at every point of law, the manner in which he sticks to his point to his point without begging anybody’s favour-is indeed remarkable.
A man wrongly seen
A man wrongly seen : This is true that he is evil, malicious and greedy. But he is not a thief or smuggler. He is not an anti-social man. What he does with Antonio,
that is because of his conmrnercial and communal jealousy. That is why Shylock is a man’more sinned against than sinning.’
उसका व्यक्तित्त्व-शायलॉक का शारीरिक व्यक्तित्त्व आकर्षक नहीं है। वह बौना, झुका हुआ, आँखें तीक्ष्ण तथा बिखरे बालों वाला है। वह अपनी उम्र से अधिक बड़ा दिखता है। उसका व्यक्तित्व उसकी बुद्धिमत्ता, चालाकी, साहस और दुद विचार में निहित है।
उसका शंकालु स्वभाव-सम्पूर्ण नाटक में शायलॉक ही ऐसा पात्र है जो अत्यधिक शंकालु प्रस्तुत किया गया है। वह अपनी बेटी पर शंका करता है और इसलिए वह उसे चेतावनी देता है कि वह खिड़की
से नहीं झाँके । वह ईसाइयों पर शंका करता है। वह अपने घरेलू नौकर लॉन्सलॉट पर शंका करता है। वह बैसनियो तथा एन्टोनियो पर शंका करता है। वह ड्यूक पर शका करता है।
उसकी अमानवीयता-उसकी अमानवीयता एन्टोनिया के बुरे व्यवहार के कारण है। व्यापार का घाटा शायलॉक की अमानवीयता का कारण है, जिसे वह एन्टोनियो के कारण मानता है।
उसकी बुद्धिमानी-पोर्शिया के अतिरिक्त अन्य कोई पात्र शायलॉक की बुद्धिमानी का मुकाबला नहीं कर सकता. जो उसे कोर्ट के दृश्य में पराजित करता है। जिस ढंग से बह पोर्शिया के प्रत्येक तर्क का उत्तर देता है, वह भी बिना किसी का सहारा लिए. वास्तव में उल्लेखनीय है।
गलत देखा गया व्यक्ति-यह सत्य है कि वह बुरा: दुर्भावनावाला और लालची है। किन्तु वह चोर या गलत चीजों का कारोबारी नहीं है। वह असामाजिक व्यक्ति नहीं है। वह एन्टोनियो के प्रति जो भी करता है वह व्यापारिक और धार्मिक ईर्ष्या के कारण करता है। इसीलिए शायलॉक उतना पापी नहीं है,
जितना उसे दिखाया गया है।

Ans. Her personal charms: Portia is certainly and undoubtedly the most fascinating and powerful character of Shakespeare. There cannot be any doubt about the personal charms of Portia because otherwise so many suitors would not have come from different corners of the world for winning her as their bride. About the beauty of Portia Bassanio says “Fair Portia’s counterfeit, what demigod, hath come so near creation’?
Her masculine and feminine qualities
Her masculine and feminine qualities : Portia possesses both masculine and feminine qualities. The chief masculine qualities which Portia possesses are sharp
intelligence, readiness of mlod, courage and sense of honour, while her feminine qualities are obedience to her father and to her husband, love for husband, gentleness of temper, tenderness of heart, shyness and modesty in a very large measure.
Her intellect
Her intellect: We find proof of Portia’s intellect at least on two occasions in the play. We notice her intellect at the time of her opinion about some of her suitors. Again we find enough proof of her intellect in the trial scene.
Her self confidence
Her self confidence: When Portia gets the news of Antonio’s misfortune, she at once sends Bassanio with money to Venice and she too prepares herself to defend Antonio in the court against Shylock. This is a clear example of her self-confidence.

उसकी मर्दाना तथा स्त्रियोचित विशेषताएँ-पोर्शिया में मर्दाना व जनाना दोनों प्रकार के गुण हैं। मुख्य मर्दाना गुण जो पोर्शिया रखती है वे हैं तीव्र बुद्धिमता, मस्तिष्क की तत्परता, साहस और रसिकता का ज्ञान, जबकि उसके स्त्रियोचित गुण हैं अपने पिता व पति के प्रति वफादारी, पति के प्रति प्रेम, स्वभाव की महानता, हृदय की कोमलता, लज्जा और पर्याप्त मात्रा में नम्रता।
उसकी बुद्धिमता-हम नाटक में कम से कम दो बार पोशिया की बुद्धिमता का सबूत देखते हैं। हम उसकी शादी के लिए आने वाले प्रेमियों के बारे में मत बनाते समय उसकी बुद्धिमता देखते है। फिर, हम अदालत में बहस के समय उसकी बुद्धिमता का पर्याप्त सबूत पाते हैं।

Ans. Not a mere fool: Gratiano plays partly the role of the clown because most of his observations are quite significant and full of wisdom. He does not create
laughter only. Gratiano appears to be more intellectual than many of the characters in the play.
His human psychology
His human psychology: Gratiano has deep knowledge of human psychology He can read human character very easily. He obeys Bassanio at Belmont because he can read the psychology of Bassanio; who does not want that Gratiano should chatter.
His wit and humour
His wit and humour: In the trial scene Gratiano speaks so many words, some of which are indeed most humorous, while others are witty, Because they appeal only to the highly intelligent section of the audience.
His social nature
His social nature : Gratiano is one of those useful men in society who will keep up the ball of mirth and good humour. He is loved by all the characters in the play except Shylock. It is only due to his social nature.

Ans. A Jester : As a comic character, he fills in probably a much greater role than Gratiano. He plays the comic role and offers sufficient food for laughter. In a chapter his humour begins when his blind old father appears on the scene and he begins to confuse his father with misleading directions for finding out Shylock’s house.
His good nature
His good nature : Launcelot is simple, innocent and good natured. He was loved by Jessica. It is because of his good nature that he can play such tricks of confusion with his father. The manner in which he cuts jokes with his father could not be done by any other person except a fool and a simpleton like Launcelot.
A good servant
A good servant : As a servant he serves Shylock and then goes to Bassanio. Jessica has faith in him. .

Ans. Salerio is just a parasite and hanger on to Antonio He flatters to the persons of importance. He circulates the story of Antonio’s shipping losses. He professes friendship for Antonio but does nothing to save Antonio from the clutches of the jew. Hence his friendship for Antonio is but lip-deep.
He is a man of deep human insight. When Bassanio leaves for Belmont, he observes the parting of the two friends. Antonio tries to hide his tears but Salerio’s
eyes catch it easily. Ile is out spoken in his words and deeds.

Ans. Solanio is a minor character of the play. He plays a short but significant role along with Salerio. He is happy and youthful character. He is the friend of Antonio and Bassanio both. Solanio is almost an echo of the words and statements of Solerio. He has observing eye but lacks wit. His friendship for Antonio is not deep. He irritates Shylock only for amusement. Shylock’s daughter Jessica has eloped with Lorenzo with a huge amount of money. Now Solanio taunts him only for fun. He is just a parasite.

of barbarism or animalism. But then, he is conscious at the same time of his inferior complexion, his ugly features and his want of culture.
His vanity
His vanity: In spite of his darkest complexion, he says that many of the fairest virgins of his country had fallen in love.
His infatuation for Portia
His infatuation for Portia : The Prince of Morocco is literally infatuated by Portia: otherwise in spite of his vanity he could not say to himself that although he
deserves many things in the world yet his deserving may fall short of Portia’s worth.

अरागॉन के राजकुमार का चरित्र-चित्रण कीजिए।
Ans. There is not much difference between the character of the Prince o Morocoo and that of the prince of Arragon because they come practically from the same territory of barbarism, dark ignorance and superstition. The only difference between them is that the prince of Morocco has some love for Portia but the prince of Arragon never talks of the beauty of Portia. Probably because he is blinded so much by his own Vanity.
“The Prince of Arragon is not a practical man. He wrongly judges things, wrongy argues everything because he suffers from the disease of self love and vanity.

looking with a bent backbone, not fair, aged and impulsive. But Jessica is fair, beautiful, romantic, poetic, extravagant, not orthodox and adventurous.
Her impulsive nature : Jessica is most impulsive, reckless, treacherous, and even cruel.
